How your sign or logo creates an image in your customers mind!

Signdealz Logo

So I was sitting in my living room thinking about what to write this evening for my Signdealz Blog. My sister has commented on my Facebook page with glee, how boring writing a blog about the sign industry sounds.

Signs, Logo's, and a Companies Image

Well, value is often calculated by the consumer of your product, and defining that audience is important.  It’s your customer who defines the value in what they read, and my customer is you, the new business owner. I would like to compare this blog to Consumer Reports Magazine. I want you, my audience to understand the significant investment your planning on making, and how really important that investment will be and like consumer reports, arm my audience with the tools to make an informed decision. Sure, I hope all you folks reading my blog will ask me for advice, and that leads into a sales transaction. An informed consumer often makes an easier customer to do business with anyway.

Now, that being said, let’s get going on to my message today.  Today, I am going to talk about image. How valuable your image can be and how many barriers you can get past just by having the right image that appeals to your customer.  Remember, buying a sign represents you, your vision for your business or corporation, and is usually the first thing the customer sees’s when they interface with you, and if it isn’t then it should be.  Let’s take a look at a salesman who sells auto parts to distributors in small towns across the South Georgia. If our imaginary salesman wears a three piece Kenneth Cole Suite on his appointments to his customers he may look professional by any standard, but he most likely will not fit in with his core customer. His customer’s perception from this first meeting may that of an elitist, and because of that, his perception is that the salesman does not understand my needs, my customer’s needs, and this alone puts the salesman in a position of weakness. From the very beginning, having good intentions has made a rookie mistake, and not taken in consideration what is important to his customer.

I believe a good salesman will always dress as the manager of the business would dress, but just one level higher. Yes, do your homework!! If your customer generally dresses in a button up long sleeve shirt with a pair of jeans, then adding a dinner jacket would be appropriate. Now, at this point you might be asking yourself how in the hell does this pertain to signage. Well, here is why.  Your approach to developing a branding strategy, of which your sign will be a part of , starts with understanding who your core customer is. Sometimes, it might be determining who you want your customer to actually be, and not who they currently are.  Start by categorizing your customer’s demographic profile. What does she like? What is her income level? Is she educated? Once you have a good understanding of the complexity and sophistication of your customer, then you can approach a logo, then you can approach your sign design.
